I recently found your blog after I caught up with HnK since... pretty much since the last lunarian attack, and I wanted to ask about that chapter when Aechmea is telling Caingnorm about how he planned a lot of what happened to Phos since the start, am I reading correctly by assuming that this dude called Phos his (and Caingnorm) sort-of child? Or did I misinterpreted the dialogue there?

Hi there! Sorry for taking so long to respond to your message. I think I know what chapter you’re talking about. It was Chapter 88, and you’re talking about some of these scenes, right? (I forgot how icky these scenes were)

To answer your question, I think your interpretation makes the most sense, though I’m sure there are other posts who have other interpretations of what Aechmea’s statements meant.

For me personally, I came to a similar conclusion after I first read that chapter. I saw Aechmea’s statements as a twisted and egotistical view of what he put Phos through. At that point in the story, Phos is considered a “human” in that world and it was all thanks to Aechmea and his indirect and direct actions. So in a really twisted way, it makes sense why Aechmea considers Phos their “child” because in his mind, he “made” Phos in nearly every sense of the word.

I apologize if what I said doesn’t 100% make sense because I’ll be honest, those last statements also confused me when I first read them and I think chapter 88 was the chapter that I didn’t make an analysis post about. I still think your interpretation makes the most sense but like I’ve said in other posts, this is a story that is meant to generate many interpretations. For all we know, Aechmea could still have meant he saw Phos as his child while also proposing to Cairn that they make child of their own. Thank you for the ask!

The latest chapter where Aechmea tells Cairngorm on how Phos was stable when he was partnered with Cairngorm just made me sad. Sad because Phos had finally found someone after Antarc and Ghost who he regularly called as his best friend and partner. AND THEN MOON GORM happened. I wouldn't want to feel what Phos felt when Cairngorm ditched for Aechmea.

It must have hurt phos so bad to have their partner side with the moon man.... insufferable pain of having their comrades, who they thought were there with them, leave one by one...;;

I think what aechmea said was interesting in this chapter... they mentioned that cairngorm had an essential role for stabilizing phos, and acknowledged that they had poor mental health.... can’t help but wonder if aechmea has been manipulating cairngorm to keep away from phos so they had no crutch of stability, making it easier for phos to succumb to anger, grief, and vengeance to ultimately become human? i am waiting for cairngorm’s real development... i am believing...moon cairngorm is just a phase...

HNK Chapter 88+ Predictions: Cruel Phos being cruel

As shown in Chapter 87, Phos is now a gem-crushing tyrant and his crusade to destroy them all isn’t over yet.

If I’m looking at the pages correctly, the only gems that are left are: Euclase, Jade, Cinnabar, Rutile, and Padparadscha. (If there’s others, please let me know.) How the story will unfold from this point on, as usual, can go in so many directions and I’m excited and scared to see what’ll happen next.

But seeing how cruel Phos has become has me wondering...

What would the most cruelest thing Phos can do at this point in the story? An action that would unsettle the fandom, with some hardcore fans still cheer for Phos while also thinking “Phos, I love you but you’ve gone too far!!”

How about....Shattering Padparadscha?

I’m sure you’re wondering: Why would Phos do that? Why would Phos shatter  Padparadscha, the last true(?) ally he had? 

Well, one of the reasons is Rutile. Remember, Rutile was the last one to chase after Phos and was ready to completely destroy him when Padparadscha came to Phos’s rescue. I’m sure it was that moment that made Phos’s decide that he wanted to destroy the gems instead of saving them. So it’d make sense that Phos would want payback for Rutile actions and what better way to do that than by destroying the person that Rutile cared about the most.

Another reason is that it’s an excuse to get parts of Padparadscha as the 7th treasure. There’s a very high chance that Phos will be getting it sometime very soon and  Padparadscha and Cinnabar are the only red things that hold any significant meaning to Phos, so it must be either one of them.

The other reason...why not? Phos doesn’t care anymore about any of the gems. He laughed at Diamond and Bort shattering and didn’t bat an eye when the other moon gems were destroyed too. So by shattering Padparadscha, it would truly show how ruthless Phos had become. And I wouldn’t put it past Ms. Haruko Ichikawa at this point. So if she truly wants to solidify the fact that Phos is now a remorseless, unrelenting, cold-hearted being, why not go all the way?

Picture this, if you will:

Before or after fighting Euclase, Phos finds Rutile with the unconscious Padparadscha. Rutile tries to attack Phos but Phos breaks Rutile easily but not enough to have him lose consciousness. Phos does this on purpose: he wants Rutile to watch.

Phos looks down at the  Padparadscha, the one ally he had left, laying fast asleep. Maybe Phos gives some parting words, like a thank you for all Padparadscha had done for Phos to lead him to where he is now and a goodbye. Or maybe says nothing at all, for feelings had for Padparadscha have long since vanished with his some of his lost memories. Doesn’t really matter what he does because it will end the same. 

Phos raises his weapon, and as Rutile is screaming, begging Phos to stop, Phos proceeds to shatter Padparadscha. Phos laughs and mocks Rutile’s anguish before Rutile meets his own end, whether it be by Phos, the Moon soldiers, or his own hands.

On one hand, one can argue that Phos was being merciful to Padparadscha, by finally granting him permanent rest. And I’m sure that there are some fans out there who really want Rutile to suffer, no matter the cost.

But on the other.... it’s pretty messed up for many, many reasons.  But this action would solidify Phos new mindset and, in my opinion, it fits him.

That’s all for now. Again, this is just a theoretical prediction and I’m sure Ms. Ichikawa has something way worse up her sleeve.

I wonder how the fandom would feel if Phos did this.

What is Land of the Lustrous? You draw a lot of art of it.

So you know Steven universe? Beings made of Gems, similar concept, COMPLETELY different story. Where SU has gem bodies of light hnk has them made completely out of the gemstone. It also takes into consideration Mohs hardness and chemical components of the stone. For instance Phosphophylite is a hardness of 3.5 so he breaks easily while Diamond is a 10. However a diamond is a monocrystal so he breaks under pressure where a Bort Diamond is different and stronger despite having the same mohs hardness level. Anyway enough of the science! The gems live on this island that's all that's left if their world and because they're immortal they're each given different tasks. Most of them, being a hardness of 5+ are battle gems who fight the Lunarians, beings from the moon who come there to shatter and bring the gems back with them. Phos is a 3.5 and despite being around for 300 years he has yet to be given a task by kongo-sensei. The story begins when kongo asks him to write and encyclopedia about their world, and while reluctant phos meets Cinnabar while doing research for it. I literally cannot say more than that without spoiling everything. I will say this tho! Like in SU all the gems go by she/her despite being gender neutral beings, hnk gems use he/him. It is literally part of their culture despite their appearances, and the only time gender was even brought up was in the late chapter 70s-80s, and right now theres about 88 chapters out so yeah. That's my little petpeave when people refer to the hnk gems as girls. Anyway if you love death and dying with great characters and a story that keeps you guessing please watch it. Orange studio (beastars) has done the first season and it follows the manga pretty much to a T. The manga is still ongoing tho and with the anime pacing they dont have enough content to do a second season yet so really, read or watch, you'll get the whole story either way

HNK Chapter 90 thoughts: Cruel Phos shows his cruelty at last

This was indeed a good chapter...After 3 months and 2 chapters of lore, it’s good to be back to witness Phos’s massacre, even though the chapter was very short. Regardless, this was a good chapter...that hurts me so good.

Euclase’s downfall

Yup. Had a feeling this was how it was going to turn out for Euclase. I was one of the unfortunate ones to see the big leak so I knew ahead of time before the official translation came out not too long ago. But again, I’m not surprised that this is how it would turn out. I will say that it was very bold (and naive) of Euclase to try to plead with Phos one last time but I think we all knew it wouldn’t have changed anything.

And as predicted, I see a lot some fans are happy to see Euclase be destroyed. Can’t say that I blame them but, from my perspective, the whole event is...I can’t think of the right word... “tragic”? Oh better yet “ironic”? I say this because, as far as I saw, Euclase was one of the only Earth gems that still had some sense of remorse for Phos and was somewhat willing to listen and negotiate with Phos before he was shattered and buried for 220 years. Emphasis on “some” and “somewhat.” So though Euclase was the main earth gem that wanted to reach some sort of compromise with Phos when Phos came back, Euclase still chose to do nothing in the end. And that’s why things ended this way. Like I’ve stated before in other posts, everyone’s interpretation of the characters is their own, and when it comes to what happened between Phos and Euclase, I totally understand why some fans many are happy with the outcome. For me personally, while I am bit disheartened that Euclase was shattered, he did have it coming.

Foes and Allies...  

Now, I don’t know how many of you saw one of my older posts, but in my “HNK Chapter 88+ Predictions” post, I predicted that in order to show how Phos truly doesn’t care about any of the gems, whether they were foes or allies, I predicted that Phos would one way or another shatter Padparadscha. And though it didn’t turn out like how I written it in that prediction, I was correct that Phos would do it. But how Haroku Ichikawa depicted was definitely still pretty cruel. He was like “Oh yeah, can you guys destroy them? Thanks.” And that was that. Just an after thought. Though I thought Phos would want to mess Rutile up a bit more after what he did to him, having Phos just letting the Lunarians destroy him along with the unconscious Padparadscha is somewhat fitting. Like a final small slap in the face, pretty much stating “You’re not worth my time.” But yup, no doubt that Rutile and Padparadscha are now definitely out of the picture. Once again, by showing how Phos is fine destroying his ally gems, especially one who is blissfully unaware and unconscious, continues to show how much Phos just doesn’t care about the gems anymore. Though I think we all already understand this.

Now Phos is going to fight Jade, who no doubt will be destroyed and this makes me sad once again. Jade has always been one of my favorite gems and was one of the few who did the least bad to Phos, as far as I can remember. Good for him for standing his ground, though I’m sure Jade knows he doesn’t stand a chance. (Love you, Jade. Do your best...)

To the Victor Go the Spoils... In Phos’s case though, it might not last.

Soon, it’ll only be Phos, Cinnabar, and Adamant. How that’ll end is anyone’s guess, especially with Aechmea/Enma on his way. Finally, Phos is getting what he is owed, after everything that he went though...but will he really?

Maybe I’m pessimistic because of everything going on both in the story and in real life, but I can’t help but feel that Phos will once again, in someway or form, will be denied of what he wants. And the euphoric feeling that he’s gained for finally exacting his revenge against his former family, will smack him back in his face in the worst way. And if the past events pushed Phos to rock bottom, this may send him to the earth’s core.

Revenge may be sweet, and Phos has every right to taste that sweetness after everything that he had endured. But like most feelings driven by anger and vengeance, the gratification never lasts. 

And if Aechmea still has plans for Phos, oooooh BOY. I don’t want to imagine how much worse this whole thing can get but, as always, I’m sure Ms. Ichikawa will find a way! She always does!!

Phos’s cycle of suffering is never going to end. NEVER.

Oh Phos... Our beloved, fallen child. You have suffered by the hands of so many.  Enjoy your revenge and bask in its tooth-rotting sweetness... Because I know it’s not going to last and what’s going to happen in the end will not be pretty.

And I have a strong feeling that the jelly fish people (I don’t remember what they’re called) might not be too keen on accepting him as he is right now, as sad as that may sound.

Anyways, good chapter. Filled me with glee and sorrow. Can’t wait to be even more broken up next month.

hnk chapter 88...IM SO SAD!! but it also makes me so mad the fact that aechmea had everything planned since the beginning. how he used phos as he pleased to fulfill his goals; i hated him from the start he showed up but omg i hate him even more now aaaaaaaAA and he also said he wanted to make phos better than a human(?? like the way he made phos 'a human' was by literally hurting them in every way possible, what else is he going to do?? im scared i hate it here ichikawa have mercy
